Romney attacks McCain on the economy
Posted: 01/12/08 05:16 PM [ET]
Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, hoping to score a much-needed win in the Michigan GOP primary Tuesday, is attacking Sen. John McCain (Ariz.), his main competitor in the state, on the economy.

The issue is especially important in Michigan, which has seen its economy in trouble for years.

Romney spoke outside of General Motors’ Willow Run plant after the company announced Saturday that it would lay off 200 workers there. He blamed Washington for the problems in Michigan, a swipe at McCain.

“And as year after year goes by, more and more layoffs occur and more plants are closed, the question is, ‘Where’s Washington?’ You hear some say that these are jobs that are just going away and we better get used to it,” Romney said in another attack at McCain.

The senator has repeatedly said that some of the lost jobs will not come back, a statement on which Romney has seized.

McCain defended his statements, saying that it is “straight talk.” However, he also noted that, while some of the lost jobs will not come back, others can be created in their stead.

Romney also criticized McCain over his carbon emission reduction legislation, saying it would burden the all-important automobile industry in Michigan.
