CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney (R) took to the skies Wednesday on a tour that took him to several Iowa cities as he was trying to drum up support just a day away from the Hawkeye State’s caucuses. At an airport hangar here, Romney was joined by just a handful of supporters, but more than two dozen media organizations were present to carry his last-minute message to the eastern part of the state. Romney was joined by former Speaker of the House and recently retired Rep. Dennis Hastert (R-Ill.) as he ran quickly through his stump speech before shaking a few hands. Most polls continue to show a close race with Romney trailing former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee (R). Most of the candidates on both sides have been canvassing the state in these last 48 hours, making a final push to ensure supporters turn out for the caucuses. “Let’s go out there and win this one,” Romney told the few supporters gathered. “We’re going to make it happen.” Other candidates have been attracting enormous crowds this week, something the campaigns see as a positive sign given some of the late hours and near-zero temperatures. |
