Young looks strong; Parnell holds out hope |

The closely watched Republican primary between Rep. Don Young and Lt. Gov. Sean Parnell for Alaska’s at-large House seat may be drawing near a conclusion, judging by statements from the head of Alaska’s Republican Party.
State GOP Chairman Randy Ruedrich told the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner that he expects Young to maintain his lead over Parnell in the race after all the remaining outstanding ballots are counted, effectively handing a victory to Young.
Ruedrich also seemed reluctant to back a recount, a strong possibility given Young’s mere 239-vote lead over Parnell.
“We’ve seen recounts in the past, and we’ve not seen any change,” Ruedrich said.
Parnell responded: “We understand there are several thousand ballots yet to be counted from overseas, and given our strong support from the military community in the state, we have every reason to be optimistic that the gap of 239 votes between me and Don Young can be closed.” |
