Pelosi slams McCrery's Social Security remark

By Elana Schor - 06/06/06 08:00 PM ET

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) blasted Rep. Jim McCrery (R-La.) yesterday after he told a gathering of business lobbyists and reporters that the House should act on Social Security reform early next year.

“When the House Republican point man on Social Security says that privatizing Social Security will be a top priority next year, it is clear the Republicans once again are not listening to the American people, who resoundingly rejected this risky scheme last year,” Pelosi said in a statement issued hours after McCrery’s appearance at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.

Now head of the Ways and Means Committee’s Social Security panel, McCrery is considered the front-runner to assume control of the full committee next year, after the retirement of current Chairman Bill Thomas (R-Calif.).
