Cupcakes come to Capitol cafeteria

By Christina Wilkie - 09/02/09 05:52 PM ET

The expensive cupcake trend has hit the House cafeteria on Capitol Hill.

A cupcake toppings bar has popped up in the Capitol cafeteria, located on the House side of the basement of the Capitol.

The trend over the past few years has been expensive cupcakes with exotic flavors and toppings. The Capitol cafeteria cupcakes are a modestly priced $2.25 a piece. Customers can decorate chocolate or vanilla cake and icing with sprinkles, mini M&Ms, Butterfinger bits, Oreo crumble, nuts, and chocolate sauce.

The Hill attempted to reach Restaurant Associates for more information, but the relevant employees are away until after Labor Day.

The only downside of the new bar may lie in what the cafeteria-izing of cupcakes means for the fancy cupcake industry itself: after all, there was a time when ice cream toppings were an expensive novelty, too.
