In the Know: Mary J. Blige, Neil Diamond, Sugarland to perform for Obama

By Christina Wilkie - 11/18/09 07:39 PM ET

Mary J. Blige, Neil Diamond, Rob Thomas, Usher and country duo Sugarland will perform at the White House on Dec. 13 during the taping of a “Christmas in Washington” TV special, set to air a week later on TNT.

Comedian George Lopez will host the musical extravaganza.

The event will mark the second White House appearance for Lopez in three months. In October, he co-hosted the Fiesta Latina with actors Eva Longoria Parker and Jimmy Smits. The evening was devoted to Latin music and featured stars like Marc Anthony and the band Los Lobos. President Barack Obama even tried out a few steps of salsa at the urging of Sheila E.

Lopez’s last appearance came on the heels of Obama’s unexpected Nobel Peace Prize win, which Lopez played for a laugh.

“In the time that I was up here,” he joked to the president, “I’ve been told to inform you, you have also won a Latin Grammy. And you will be knighted.”

I am so disappointed that neil diamond would want to perform for obama. he has been my favorite singer for years… I don't think I will be able to enjoy his music anymore…BY ginny on 11/20/2009 at 19:34

Being asked to sing at the White House is an honor that a musician might never get again. Whether you support the president or not, it would be insane to turn down an offer like that. Yes, I like Obama so I'm glad that my favorite group, Sugarland, chose to perform, but, in contrast, one of my favorite singers performed at Sarah Palin rallies during the election. I'm still able to listen to her just fine even though I'm not a Palin fan. People should grow up a realize that these stars are people just like you and I and they're allowed to form their own opinions and make thier own choices.BY Liz on 12/13/2009 at 22:35
I'n my opinion…Neil should accept the chance to perform at the white house and every else he's asked. At his age not enough of our young people know who he is…Maybe, just maybe a few of our young people might get the chance to see him some where on some show in some house. I'd hate to hear how many people would say "Neil who" after he's gone.BY VIKKI on 12/14/2009 at 21:25
