Former PR girl gets bitten by Capitol Hill bug

Maureen Shanahan recently began working as Rep. Betty Sutton’s (D-Ohio) press secretary. After gaining professional experience working in public relations and communications roles at Resorts International, a gaming company headquartered in Las Vegas, and for Steve Madden and the Kansas City Chiefs, Shanahan came to D.C. in late May and interned with the Committee on Homeland Security. She was “bitten by the Hill bug,” and is now thrilled to join Sutton’s staff. Shanahan was born in Indianapolis, grew up in Chicago and moved to Winter Park, Fla., when she was a sophomore in high school. She enjoys softball, golfing and other outdoor activities. She also enjoys cooking, dancing and taking in live music.

Sailing away

Fritz Chaleff, communications director for Rep. Brian Bilbray (R-Calif.), is participating in the Chicago-to-Mackinac sailing race, the longest freshwater sailing race in the world, on Friday. Chaleff will be the co-captain for the second year in a row. He hopes to bring the 54-foot Princess M to a first-place finish after nearly 100 hours of continuous sailboat racing. Bilbray, chairman of the Immigration Reform Caucus in the House, has been coaching Chaleff between interviews on immigration reform. Bilbray grew up sailing in San Diego and has been known to sail with Dennis Conner, the four-time winner of the America’s Cup.
