The wife of Sen. Richard Lugar (R-Ind.) was arrested on Wednesday and charged with drunk driving and leaving the scene of an accident.
Charlene Lugar was stopped by police in McLean, Va., at approximately 6:30 p.m. after officers noticed damage to the front of her car and smoke coming from underneath the hood. Police determined that she had hit a parked car in the 7100 block of Churchhill Road, a few blocks from where she was stopped. No one else was in the car with her at the time.
Officers arrested Mrs. Lugar and transported her to Fairfax County's adult detention center, where they administered a breathalyzer test, Fairfax Sheriff's Lt. Sonny Cachuela told The Washington Post.
Lugar was charged with driving while intoxicated and leaving the scene of an accident before being released from custody several hours later. Sen. Lugar said in a statement Thursday that a court date was set for January.
The lawmaker said that he and his wife are "deeply sorry and embarrassed that this accident has occurred.”
Sen. Lugar was scheduled to meet with Vice President Joe Biden on Friday morning, but the meeting was rescheduled because Biden is ill, according to a congressional source. For more click here This story was updated at 8:10 p.m.

Former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich (D) has canceled his planned appearance at Tuesday's National Press Club Book Fair, according to organizers, hours before the event is scheduled to begin.
Blagojevich had planned to promote his recent memoir "The Governor" at the event, which will feature more than 100 prominent authors. The former lawmaker has been indicted on corruption charges. According to his publicist, Blagojevich was looking forward to the event, but travel delays related to an undisclosed TV project prevented him from attending. "The governor is honored to have been asked," said publicist Glenn Selig.
