Kucinich staffer proposes atop the Capitol dome

Congratulations are in order to Rep. Dennis Kucinich’s (D-Ohio) communications director, Nathan White, and his new fiancee, Gizem Salcigil. White, 26, proposed to his girlfriend of three years on Tuesday afternoon at the top balcony of the Capitol dome.

“I had to make the reservations for the dome tour six weeks in advance,” he told ITK, “and it was only once I had the day planned that I bought the ring.”

Salcigil, who is 28, hails from Turkey, where her grandfather was the mayor of Ankara, the capital city, “so she and her family appreciated the political setting for my proposal,” he said.

The bride-to-be is the marketing and communications director for Turkish Policy Quarterly, a scholarly journal, and just last week she launched a new website, www.turkayfe.org, a social-networking site for people who love Turkey.

White said Salcigil had no idea where they were going on Tuesday afternoon. “I just told her where to meet me, to wear sneakers, and try not to be late,” he said.

“As we climbed higher and higher into the dome, she kept thinking that we’d gone as high up as we could go, but then I’d take her one step higher, until we got to the highest point in the Capitol. Then I dropped on one knee and she’s looking at me like, ‘What are you doing on the ground?’ ” Awww …

The couple is looking at a tentative wedding date of July 3 of this year, and White said they’re having a surprising amount of luck with D.C. venues.

ITK congratulates the lovebirds.
