Eccentric rocker Jack White to play White House

Jack White, the enigmatic rock star who claimed for years to be the brother of his White Stripes bandmate Meg White, but is in fact her ex-husband, will play the White House on June 2, part of a star-studded tribute to Sir Paul McCartney.

White has a well-publicized obsession with the number 3, he’s been arrested for brawling in a Detroit bar, and he posted footage of himself undergoing finger surgery online in 2003. Not quite your squeaky-clean Jonas Brothers type of musician. 

But that didn’t appear to bother the booking team at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. 

White will join a cadre of A-list musicians, including Elvis Costello, Dave Grohl, country crooner Emmylou Harris, and, yes, the Jonas Brothers in a tribute to McCartney, who will receive the Gershwin Prize from the Library of Congress for popular music. 

McCartney is only the third musician ever to receive the prestigious award, and he’s in good company: Paul Simon and Stevie Wonder have both won the prize, and Wonder will join the musical evening.
