Vice President Joe Biden is a serious fan of the National Hockey League’s Philadelphia Flyers. But it’s not because he’s from Philly, or because he loves the team so much. It’s because if he doesn’t root for them, he can expect to spend the night alone.
The veep explained his tricky situation on Monday while in Chicago at a fundraising lunch. The city’s Blackhawks recently beat the Flyers in six games to win the 2010 Stanley Cup championship.
And while he said he’s always liked the Flyers, Biden confessed that he found a new passion for the team thanks to his wife, Dr. Jill Biden. “I married a Philly girl, and Philadelphia fans are the most, uh, most persistent fans in the world. My wife is counted among them.
“It’s a simple proposition. I root fervently for the Flyers or I sleep alone. It’s not a hard call. It’s not a hard call at all.”
Biden said he was unable to catch the final game of the Flyers-Blackhawks series because he was in Africa with his wife, but said, “That was one hell of a series, though.”
