World Cup win leads to chants of ‘USA!’ at the White House

By Christina Wilkie - 06/23/10 07:19 PM ET

While the White House press corps waited to hear news from the president about Gen. Stanley McChrystal, the briefing room turned its eyes to South Africa.

Reporters throughout the West Wing were cheering and groaning as the U.S. World Cup soccer team missed repeated chances to score in a must-win match against Algeria.

When the U.S.’s Landon Donovan scored the game winner in injury time, the building erupted and a White House aide came on the intercom to briefly chant, “USA! USA!”

After the excitement died down, reporters got back to work, resuming their McChrystal watch.
