Bristol Palin engaged, her parents learn from Us Weekly

Surprise! Bristol Palin is getting married. Double surprise: Her parents, Sarah and Todd Palin, learned of her plans from an Us Weekly cover story. Ouch.

The eldest daughter of the former vice presidential candidate plans to marry Levi Johnston, her one-time fiance and the father of her son, Tripp Palin.

According to the gossip mag, the pair got engaged two weeks ago, without the approval of either sets of parents.

Johnston told the magazine that the couple reconciled during a romantic walk with their son. “I really thought we were over,” he said, “so when I went [on the walk], I had no hope. I think we both just started talking.”

Following the couple’s initial March 2009 breakup, Johnston, 20, gave a number of embarrassing interviews. Last week, he publicly apologized for the comments, which he said were “not entirely true.” He told People magazine, “I have already privately apologized to Todd and Sarah, [but] since my statements were public, I owe it to the Palins to publicly apologize.”

On Wednesday, Sarah and Todd Palin issued a joint statement that was read on the “Today” show. The statement stressed that Bristol, 19, is a “young adult” and that she believes in “forgiveness to a degree most of us struggle to put in practice in our daily lives.”
