Sen. Frank Lautenberg settles sandwich debate

By Christina Wilkie - 07/28/10 07:23 PM ET

Sen. Frank Lautenberg (D-N.J.) weighed in Wednesday on what New Jerseyans call their sandwiches.

The senator corrected a guess made on the air Wednesday morning by NBC’s Chuck Todd, who had noted that President Obama’s visit Wednesday to the Tastee Sub Shop in Edison, N.J., “[settles] the age-old question of whether you call it a sub, a grinder or a hoghoagie.”

Todd later added, “We have a vote of 2 to 1 to 1 ‘grinders’ versus ‘hoagies’ versus ‘subs,’ but in Jersey, I think it is a ‘grinder.’ ”

Lautenberg replied on Twitter:

“In #NJ we call them subs in the north and hoagies in the south. But nowhere in #NJ are they called grinders.”
