Rep. Cohen mourns murdered NBA player

By Christina Wilkie - 08/02/10 07:31 PM ET

Rep. Steve Cohen (D-Tenn.) is feeling the loss of his friend, Memphis native and former NBA star Lorenzen Wright.

Wright’s body was discovered on Wednesday, the victim of multiple gunshot wounds. Wright disappeared on July 19, and police have yet to identify a suspect. Authorities searched the home of Wright’s ex-wife last week, but no arrests were made.

Cohen took to the House floor Thursday to give Wright a congressional tribute, noting the former Memphis Grizzlies player was “a family man” who was “loved in Memphis and ... loved his children.
“I miss Lorenzen Wright as a friend,” Cohen said, and “I appreciate all he did for my city.”

Before retiring in 2009 at age 34, Wright played 14 seasons in the NBA. Five of those were with the Grizzlies, but he also played for the Los Angeles Clippers, Cleveland Cavaliers, Atlanta Hawks and Sacramento Kings.
