There are lots of useful, discreet ways to recount background conversations with White House staffers without mentioning who they are. But sometimes it just slips out.

That’s what happened to Sen. Kit Bond (R-Mo.) on Wednesday during a radio interview with reporters.

“A high-level official in the White House called me about a month ago,” Bond said, “and he was asking me for a favor, so he said, ‘Hey, how are things going in Missouri?’

“And I said, ‘Rahm, things are absolutely on fire in Missouri.’ ”

D’oh!

Thankfully for Bond, the reference to White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel was fairly harmless.
