Wasserman Schultz uses Twitter to name puppy

By Christina Wilkie - 02/28/11 08:20 PM ET

Twitter has not only changed how the world gets its news, helped start revolutions and allowed Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-N.Y.) to post too many photos from his teen years.

Now it’s helping lawmakers name their pets.

Say hello to Demmy, Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz’s female Golden Labrador puppy, who was named over the weekend via the social networking site.

The endeavor began Saturday, when the Florida Democrat put out a call to her nearly 4,000 followers to “Help us name r new puppy. Tweet suggestions. Name should end in ie or y. My kids will see tweets — please be nice!”

Plenty of suggestions poured in, and less than 48 hours later, one very cute puppy had an unabashedly partisan name.

“Meet Demmy!” Wasserman Schultz tweeted Monday afternoon: “Schultz Family txs every1 for gr8 names. Txs 4 helping to match 2 of my passions — my politics+my pets.”

Demmy’s moniker likely comes as little surprise to those who work alongside the mom, lawmaker and ardent Democrat. Still, a few Republicans on Capitol Hill think Demmy needs a GOP counterpart.

“Why would a partisan dog ever be named Demmy?” joked one Republican House staffer, “when she would be so much cuter with a name that’s more Re-puppy-can?”
