Speaker sports spiffy tie at White House dinner

By Christina Wilkie - 05/02/11 07:14 PM ET

Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) was sporting a spiffy multicolored bow tie at the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner on Saturday night.

Asked if the colorful tie will be appearing in the halls of Capitol Hill, Boehner laughed and basically said not to hold your breath.

“It’s a special occasion,” Boehner said. It’s well-known that the House Speaker isn’t keen on donning a tuxedo to attend the myriad Washington shindigs required of House leaders, preferring an elegant suit and tie to the penguin look.

Boehner, who is said to be a very good golfer, said his handicap is now a 10. Boehner has joked that if he ever plays golf with President Obama, he’ll have to give him strokes.

And it’s doubtful that Boehner will be generous on gimmes, especially because a strong suit of Boehner’s game is putting.
