Gillibrand one of the best tennis players in the Senate

By Christina Wilkie - 05/16/11 07:53 PM ET

For years, John Breaux was regarded as the best tennis player in the Senate, followed by Evan Bayh. But now that the conservative Democrats have left the upper chamber, there is a lot of chatter that Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.) is the queen of the Senate court.

Gillibrand is an excellent player, an ITK spy said — so good that she could give Breaux a run for his money.

Gillibrand is no trash-talker, though (unfortunately for ITK!). Asked recently about her skills, Gillibrand said she plays about once a week or so, not nearly as much as she used to.

The New York Democrat played on her high school team. A 2010 profile of Gillibrand in New York Magazine reported that she “earned a reputation as a player who wore down her competitors by returning their shots until they crumpled with exhaustion.”

But could she beat Breaux? ITK contacted Breaux’s Patton Boggs office, but didn’t hear back.
