Durbin does his thinking on Eastern Market bench

By Judy Kurtz - 08/01/11 06:46 PM ET

When the going gets tough, the tough get going — to Eastern Market.

In the midst of debt-ceiling negotiations on Saturday, Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) revealed that sometimes lawmakers need to unwind: “This morning, as many members of the Senate, I wanted to get away from this place and spend a few minutes reflecting on something other than the give-and-take of the political debate.”

He then disclosed exactly where he whips up a little R&R, saying, “I got up early, walked over to Eastern Market, bought a cup of coffee and sat on a bench for about three hours just watching people walk by and trying to clear my mind.”

Three hours of people-watching while plopped down on a bench doesn’t exactly sound like paradise to ITK. Someone send the senator to a spa!
