President recalls Lady Gaga’s monstrously high heels

By Judy Kurtz - 10/03/11 07:07 PM ET

Not much seems to throw President Obama, except perhaps a pair of sky-high heels.

Appearing as the keynote speaker at Saturday’s Human Rights Campaign dinner at the Washington Convention Center, the president recalled his recent face-to-face with the empress of extreme footwear, Lady Gaga.

Obama said with a smile, “She was wearing 16-inch heels.” The president added between laughs from the audience, “She was 8 feet tall. It was a little intimidating.”

While 16 inches might seem like an exaggeration, it wouldn’t be utterly unheard of for the pop star, who has been known to sport gravity-defying stilettos. She strutted in 10-inch Armadillo shoes by the late designer Alexander McQueen in her music video for “Bad Romance.” The singer was also snapped taking a tumble last year while wearing another pair of absurdly tall shoes at Heathrow Airport.

It may be hard to believe, but the foot fashions that Obama encountered don’t come close to topping the tallest shoes out there. According to the website for the Guinness Book of World Records, the highest heels commercially available are a pair of boots made in 2004 that boast a combo of 17-inch platforms and 20-inch heels.
