Congressman guards FDA chief’s purse

By Bob Cusack - 03/05/12 09:22 PM ET

Rep. Tom Latham (R-Iowa), who is engaged in a tough reelection battle against Rep. Leonard Boswell (D-Iowa) in what will be a very expensive race, is looking for money in the most unusual places.

During an Appropriations subcommittee hearing last week, Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Commissioner Margaret Hamburg noted that she had left behind her purse after a recent congressional briefing.

“Congressman Latham made sure that it was watched over safely until I came back to get it. So thank you very much,” Hamburg said.

“There wasn’t much in it,” Latham deadpanned.
