Congresswoman used to be confused for intern

Rep. Martha Roby’s staffers admit their boss joined the ranks of other (young) members of Congress when she was mistaken for an intern shortly after being sworn into office. 

Speaking recently at a charity dinner on behalf of the Alabama Republican on a night the congresswoman was held up by a late-night vote, Roby’s communications director, Brecke Popelka, and another aide revealed that when she arrived in the House last year, security often confused the fresh-faced mom of two, 35, for a copy machine-running Capitol Hill intern.

But the intern confusion crosses both gender and party lines.

In 2010, then 43-year-old Rep. Jim Himes (D-Conn.) wrote on Twitter: “Page on the Floor asked me if I was an intern. I thought she would then burst into tears, but told her it’s best compliment I’ve gotten.”
