House members cheer on Rhode Island’s Miss USA win

By Judy Kurtz - 06/04/12 07:27 PM ET

Two Rhode Island Democrats are singing the praises of a hometown gal who’s now the first woman from the Ocean State to wear the Miss USA crown.

Miss Rhode Island Olivia Culpo sashayed her way to a win at the Sunday beauty pageant.

Rep. Jim Langevin applauded the Boston University student’s victory, writing in a statement, “I’m proud Rhode Island was represented so graciously at the event and I congratulate Olivia on her achievement. She is certainly a talented young woman and I wish her the best in all of her endeavors going forward.”

Rep. David Cicilline sounded like a proud papa in his email: “This is the first time Rhode Island has won this competition, and our entire state is incredibly proud of Olivia’s accomplishments — we all wish her continued success.”

The cellist, 20, expressed support for transgender pageant contestants during the interview round of the NBC-aired show.

Culpo will represent the nation at the Miss Universe competition in December.
