Remembering the '70s with Sen. Klobuchar

By Ben Geman - 09/04/12 12:01 PM ET

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.) admits that she’s among the many people who had awkward fashion moments in the 1970s.

The senator went off-topic to recall a teenage job during an energy policy event hosted by The Hill Tuesday.

“Back in the late '70s, when you were a car hop at A&W, they made you wear a very tight T-shirt that said ‘take home a jug of fun,’” recalls Klobuchar, who was born in 1960.

The Minnesota Democrat is known to be among the senate’s funnier members, a talent that she brought to the Democratic National Convention here.

Beyond recalling her gig at the root beer stand, Klobuchar provided other laughs during the event, which was co-hosted by Ingersoll Rand Co., a company with energy-efficiency-related product lines.

Klobuchar had an energy-related riff on Garrison Keillor’s description of Minnesota’s fictional Lake Wobegon on his “Prairie Home Companion” radio show.

“Our state is a state where the women are strong, the men are good-looking, and all the HVAC systems are above average,” she quipped.
