Democrats have a crier of their own
Move over, John Boehner. The Democrats have their own crier.
Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa (D), the chairman of the Democratic National Convention, said Tuesday that he grew up in a home dominated by women where movie-watching and crying went hand in hand.
“I’m one of those guys that cries at the movies,” Villaraigosa told a group of Latino leaders gathered Tuesday for a lunch in Charlotte. “I grew up in an all-female home, strong mom … and everybody in my family — mostly women … you know, you’d always watch the classics and everybody would start crying.”
Indeed, after the GOP won the House in 2010, Boehner told CBS that he can’t go to a school anymore because the sight of little kids running around makes him weep.
“Can’t talk about it,” he said in that “60 Minutes” interview.
Villaraigosa said he tends to keep his crying more private.
“Many of you have known me — the elected officials here … have known me — for 25 or 30 years, and nobody’s ever seen me cry in public,” he said. “I don’t know why. I guess I wasn’t watching ‘The Lion King’ in public.”
The L.A. mayor then noted a recent exception to that trend: Speaking to a group of mayors about President Obama’s new program to defer the deportation of high-achieving illegal immigrants, Villaraigosa said he lost it.
“I started talking about the DREAMers and who they are — I started talking about their stories,” he said Tuesday. “And you know what, I broke down and cried in front of every mayor there.”
