Cupcakes heading to Congress in anti-partisanship campaign

By Judy Kurtz - 09/19/12 02:38 PM ET

Can cupcakes bring Congress together?

That’s what Sprinkles Cupcakes is aiming for with a new anti-partisanship campaign called “Pay it Forward.”

Starting this week, the California-based chain, which has a store in Georgetown, is asking members of Congress to “sweeten party politics” by gifting one another with a dozen Sprinkles cupcakes. The batches of baked goods will be free to lawmakers on one condition — they must bestow their cupcakes on a colleague from an opposing party.

Sprinkles founder Candace Nelson, who also serves as a judge on Food Network’s “Cupcake Wars,” told ITK in an email, “Sprinkles Cupcakes are freshly-made and easily giftable — the perfect way to open doors and most importantly, open dialogue.

"And where better to get this process started than in the halls of Congress. We hope that our Sprinkles gift boxes will soon be flying between Hill offices and helping move our country forward.”
