Actor Robert Redford is endorsing Rep. Shelley Berkley (D-Nev.) in her tight race against Sen. Dean Heller (R-Nev.) for Heller’s Senate seat.
In an email sent out by the Berkley campaign Friday, the legendary “All the President’s Men” star and environmental activist writes, “There seems to be way too many silly distractions in this campaign and that can sometimes take us away from the big issues.”
Citing climate change and investing in clean energy, Redford, 76, says he’s supporting Berkley because “This isn’t just about the next election. It’s about the next generation (and the ones after that) — and the planet they’ll inherit.”
Redford, who serves as a trustee for the Natural Resources Defense Council, asks in his message for donors to give money to Berkley’s campaign “to help Shelley in her fight for a better future.”
The fundraising pitch is accompanied by a photo of Redford clad in a blue denim shirt, above a quote reading, “We need Shelley in the U.S. Senate.”
The race in The Silver State, a swing state, could determine which party controls the Senate next year.
