GOP senators strategize at luxury golf resort

By Christina Wilkie - 11/11/09 06:40 PM ET

Senate Republicans and their families spent the weekend at one of the nation’s most luxurious golf resorts: The Cloisters and The Lodge at Sea Island, Ga., the site of the National Republican Senatorial Committee’s fall retreat.

The resort sits on a privately owned island situated on Georgia’s Golden Coast, and it is consistently ranked among the best golf resorts in the country.

Two of the upper chamber's best golfers, Sens. Bob Corker (R-Tenn.) and Judd Gregg (R-N.H.), were missing in action and there was no word on whether full-time resident and PGA star Davis Love III was on the greens.

Sea Island gained international attention in 2004, when then-President George W. Bush hosted world leaders and their staffs at the island for the G-8 summit.

This is the fifth consecutive year the committee has chosen Sea Island for its seasonal strategy session. In addition to golf, the resort features a 65,000-square-foot spa, a skeet shooting range, five restaurants, shopping and horseback riding.

Top suites have reportedly fetched $5,000 a night in high season, but an NRSC spokesman told ITK that the campaign committee received a flat rate of $350 per night.

This ITK item was updated on Nov.. 12 at 12:20 p.m.
