Rep. Steve Cohen impersonated Elvis

By Christina Wilkie - 11/11/09 06:51 PM ET

Rep. Steve Cohen (D-Tenn.) is a music lover and has been for a very long time.

When he was 7 years old, the Memphis congressman performed Elvis Presley’s smash hit “Don’t Be Cruel” in front of his entire school, wearing an Elvis costume.

“It was for the annual school parade and talent show, and I wore all black from head to toe, and I had blue suede shoes, which were just the best,” he told ITK recently.

“My mom painted sideburns on me with makeup, and I got up in front of everybody and sang ‘Don’t be Cruel.’ ”

The song debuted the same year, 1956, which suggests that Cohen was a pretty hip second-grader.

The verdict from his peers?

“I was a hit!”
