First family celebrates Valerie Jarrett’s birthday

By Christina Wilkie - 11/23/09 06:00 PM ET

President Barack Obama, first lady Michelle Obama and daughters Sasha and Malia attended a birthday dinner on Saturday night for senior adviser to the president Valerie Jarrett at her home in Georgetown. Jarrett’s house is the only private home Obama has visited for dinner since moving to Washington in January of this year.

A longtime friend of the Obamas, Jarrett turned 56 on Nov. 15, while on a presidential visit to Asia. A surprise party was held aboard Air Force One for Jarrett and speechwriter Ben Rhodes, who had a birthday the same day.

The president spent Saturday afternoon golfing at Andrews Air Force Base with trip director Marvin Nicholson, legislative affairs staffer Eugene Kang and campaign photographer David Katz.

Arriving home from the golf outing at 5:05 p.m., Obama performed a quick change and departed for Jarrett’s party less than an hour later, arriving at the Georgetown condo at approximately 6:15 p.m.

No word on whether the president was watching C-SPAN at Jarrett’s house for the big vote on healthcare on Saturday night. But ITK is willing to bet the TV was on.
