Congress debates ‘The Cat in the Hat’
The House honored the late Dr. Seuss this week, and his many children’s books, including The Cat in the Hat.
During an afternoon session on the House floor Tuesday, members of both political parties lauded Theodor Geisel, also known as Dr. Seuss.
She said, “Mr. Speaker, I rise today in support of a cat who is known worldwide for his red and white hat, in support of a fox who liked to wear his socks and his game-playing friend called Mr. Knox.”
In her floor speech, Markey referenced many of Dr. Seuss’s characters, including Thing 1, Thing 2 and “the mean old Grinch.”
She said, “These characters taught our children to read. In the field of children’s literacy, Dr. Seuss took the lead. Through the power of Green Eggs and Ham, our children exclaimed, ‘I can read, Sam-I-am.’ “
Markey noted that Tuesday would have been Geisel’s 106th birthday.
Markey’s bipartisan measure has 26 co-sponsors.
