Meet the Lawmaker: Rep. Andre Carson (D-Ind.), 7th District

What did you want to be when you were a kid?

I bounced around after I came to the realization that I’d probably never be Spiderman or Batman. I settled on either being a businessman or getting into law enforcement, or actually becoming a scientist of some sort.

What’s your proudest moment?

I don’t know if I could put it on one single moment. I have to really be a politician here and say the day I got married or when my daughter came home. You’re putting me in a tight bind … there have been so many defining moments, and my life has been like an assembly of defining moments.

What do you think your biggest political mistake has been?

I can be very passionate when it comes to running and speaking out for people and working in the community. I don’t know if I have any hard mistakes, probably [something like] if we crank this effort up 30 notches, probably not cranking it up 35 notches. There’s always deep self-analysis after these events.

Has God ever spoken to you?

Not in terms of the clouds parting and … [saying] directly, “Hi, this is God, Andre, how are you?” I probably wouldn’t be here now because I’d check in somewhere. I can’t say directly. I think possibly through people and through creation. … I think through signs, through people, through kind words, through a smile when I’m down.

Finish this sentence: My favorite place in the whole world is …

Probably has to be my home office because we have like a mini library in there and I can just escape and delve into the world of knowledge and information, political books, philosophical books and the like. So it’s the laboratory of sorts.

If you weren’t yourself, which lawmaker would you prefer to be?

I’d probably have to say Andy Jacobs, former member of Congress out of Indianapolis. I’d say a congresswoman, but that opens up too many other things.

Do you believe in UFOs?

I’m open. [You’re] taking me back to teenage years. … I’m open to the possibility.

Have you ever voted for a Republican for president?

No.

What’s your favorite hobby?

This is the real Andre coming out. I know it’s dull and boring. But I really enjoy reading. I’m big into biographies, I’m big into philosophy, I’m big into political books.

How many autographs do you sign per year?

It’s interesting, over the past few weeks I’ve signed a few, but I’ve not been in an autograph mode. I’m just a regular guy. I’ve signed a few in the past year. I don’t have a number.

Are you morally opposed to premarital sex?

Listen, I don’t think you’ll see me on the steps of the Capitol with a bullhorn.
