Meet the Lawmaker: Rep. Steve Scalise (R-La.)

By Kris Kitto - 09/23/08 02:16 PM ET

Best and worst thing about Washington:
Best thing is that you work in a living history museum. The worst thing is the partisanship that creates the inability to get things done for the advancement of our country.

Something you’re passionate about:
Reforming government in general. That’s why I got into politics ... Bringing back the things that make this country great: individual freedom, less government, lower taxes.

What did you want to be when you were young?
I wanted to be an astronaut. I took some science courses and realized that’s not the best direction for me. But I still have a fascination with space exploration.

If you weren’t yourself, which lawmaker would you be?
I haven’t been here long enough ... Abraham Lincoln was a lawmaker.

My favorite place in the whole world is ...
I’ll start with New Orleans, but I could say Venice. My wife and I went there for our honeymoon, and it was a wonderful experience.

The one thing I cannot tolerate is ...
Corruption.

Biggest political mistake:
I haven’t been here long enough for one to rise to that level.

Best moment:
The birth of my daughter ... I got to cut the umbilical cord.
