Meet the Lawmaker: Sen. George LeMieux (R-Fla.)

By Kris Kitto - 01/05/10 08:14 PM ET

What are the best and worst things about Washington?

Sen. LeMieux: The worst thing? For a guy from Florida, freezing rain isn’t on the top of my list of things I like about Washington.
[For the best thing,] driving up to the Capitol every day, I get a lump in my throat. It’s such an honor to represent Floridians.

What did you want to be when you were growing up?

Sen. LeMieux: I wanted to be a lawyer, and I wanted to be a public servant. So I’ve been fortunate to achieve both of those.
If you weren’t yourself, which lawmaker would you prefer to be?
Sen. LeMieux: I have a great admiration for [Senate Minority Leader] Mr. [Mitch] McConnell [R-Ky.].

Finish this sentence: My favorite place in the world is …

Sen. LeMieux: I think being on a Florida beach.

What has been your biggest political mistake?

Sen. LeMieux: Underestimating the inertia that prevents you from getting things done … Government doesn’t like to act.

Who’s your favorite member of the opposite party?

Sen. LeMieux: I personally like very much [Sen.] Amy Klobuchar [D-Minn.]. She and I are working on some things together.

What household chore do you dislike?

Sen.  LeMieux: Changing my baby’s diapers in the middle of the night.

What’s your guilty pleasure?

Sen. LeMieux: My wife and I at night watching something brainless on the television just to relax.
