With more than 2,000 performances annually and nearly 2 million visitors, the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts is America’s busiest arts facility. Millennium Stage upcoming performances:Thursday, June 14 Tiny Ninja Theater Part of Shakespeare in Washington New York City-based Tiny Ninja Theater, founded in 1999 by company director Dov Weinstein, uses tiny plastic ninjas (found in vending machines throughout the city) and other “assorted dime-store figures” to perform classical theater. On June14, they perform Romeo and Juliet.
Friday, June 15 Violinist Ana Milosavljevic performs a multimedia recital featuring exciting works by living composers written for violin, electronics, and video. Presented in cooperation with the Embassy of Serbia.
Saturday, June 16 The National Conducting Institute In the concert hall The National Conducting Institute presents a special performance by the NSO conducted by participants selected as debut conductors: Kayoko Dan, Julian Kuerti, Marcelo Lehninger and Ruth Lin. The program includes works by Beethoven, Franck, Wagner and Dvorák.
Sunday, June 17 Deaf Dog and the Indictments, a guitar-based group of seven musically inclined D.C. judges and a civilian drummer — all dressed in dark suits and shades — rile the crowd with rock and roll, blues and Motown.
Monday, June 18 Cuatro Trio — composed of Jorge Glem, Edward Ramirez and Hector Molina — delight audiences with the rhythm and bright harmonies of Venezuelan folk music on the cuatro, a 4-stringed, small-bodied guitar. Presented in cooperation with the Embassy of Venezuela.
Tuesday, June 19 Plunky & Oneness The Ska-talites FROM 6 to 9 p.m. outdoors on the South Plaza Called by the New York Times “essential to the transformation of ska into reggae,” Jamaica’s own The Ska-talites rocks the South Plaza stage. Richmond-based jazz-funk band Plunky & Oneness is the opening act. Plaza opens at 5:30 p.m. Lawn chairs welcome. In conjunction with the “Conference on the Caribbean” and in cooperation with Metro and CARICOM.
Wednesday, June 20 Cheick Hamala Diabate UNHCR World Refugee Day A West African historian in the Griot tradition recognized as one of the world’s masters of the ngoni — a stringed lute and ancestor to the banjo — Cheick Hamala Diabate shares the oral history, music and song of his culture as it was passed on to him from birth by parent to child. He performs with the Manding Cultural Ensemble.
Thursday, June 21 Bertell Knox Group Led by veteran jazz drummer Bertell Knox, the quartet swings standards.
Friday, June 22 Ahwach Troup The Berber folk ensemble from Morocco performs ancient ritual music on traditional instruments and sings in their native language. Presented in cooperation with Voluntour Morocco.
Saturday, June 23 Gesel Mason Performance Projects, led by choreographer and performer Gesel Mason, brings technical control and dramatic intensity to its thought-provoking dance works.
Sunday, June 24 Erin McKeown From pop to all-out rock, electronica to swing, 28-year-old songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Erin McKeown has five studio albums and two EPs to her credit, and has garnered the praise of fans and critics alike.
Monday, June 25 Ensemble Carpe Diem The Millennium Stage presents Coro Fabrettino, a children’s chorus from Nicaragua, and Ensemble Carpe Diem, a 13-member guitar group from Serbia. In conjunction with the International Child Art Foundation (ICAF) and the 2007 World Children’s Festival.
Tuesday, June 26 Ondrej Havelka and his Melody Makers bring their authentic and stylish interpretation of popular music of the swing era from the 1930s to the early 1940s. This includes tunes from Hollywood musicals as well as Czech and American big-band and swing numbers. In cooperation with the Embassy of the Czech Republic.
Wednesday, June 27 Robin Kauffman Scott Fore Buddy Pendleton Part of the Smithsonian Folklife Festival Celebrating the roots of Virginia culture, Scott Fore, the 2007 International Flat-Picking Guitar Champion, is joined by bluegrass fiddle pioneer Buddy Pendleton and his daughter Robin Kauffman, also an accomplished fiddler and vocalist.
Thursday, June 28 Sounds of Yunnan Part of the Smithsonian Folklife Festival Enjoy the music and song of China’s ethnically diverse Yunnan Province.
Friday, June 29 Four Men and a Dog Part of the Smithsonian Folklife Festival Four Men and a Dog offer an eclectic blend of traditional Irish music with a wide spectrum of other genres, including rap, Southern rock, jazz, blues, bluegrass, polka, country swing and salsa.
Saturday, June 30 Low Country Boys Part of the Smithsonian Folklife Festival The Low Country Boys blend Ulster-Scots, Scots, and old-time hillbilly music.
