Don McGahn, a Republican member of the Federal Election Commission and a longtime friend of Ryan’s, found that out a few years ago while mulling the prospect of children after getting married to Shannon Flaherty.

When Ryan’s wife Janna found out McGahan was thinking about having kids, she urged him to chat with her husband. A former congressional aide, she became friends with McGahn years ago though Capitol Hill social connections.

McGahn said Ryan, who has a daughter and two sons, quickly dispelled any doubts he might have had about having children.

“He went to town on me,” McGahn reminisced during a beer and brats party hosted on Wednesday by the Wisconsin delegation.

McGahn is now the proud father of an 11-month-old boy and has no regrets.

“It teaches you what’s important,” McGahn said. “You learn to get perspective on things.”
