Here’s what a day in the life of a self-proclaimed top anti-Hillary Rodham Clinton activist looks like: Home-based work as a self-employed securities trader. Perhaps hit the gym for a couple of hours, or go for a run. Then, for anywhere from one to 10 hours, it’s stopping the junior Democratic senator from New York from reaching the White House.

Meet Robert Morrow. Or perhaps you already have. In fact, if you’re a working journalist in Washington, you’ve likely received his diatribes. He’s the 43-year-old living, breathing human sending those anti-Clinton e-mails that land in many Washington inboxes at eating-and-sleeping times like 8:20 p.m. and 1:37 a.m. Subject lines read something like,

“Some choice quotes about and by Hillary and Bill,” “Another fantastic whopper: Hillary talks to TIME in ’96 about ADOPTING a child!!” or “Bill Clinton was LYING (as usual) about the crash of TWA Flight 800 (7-17-96).”

So we decided to give Morrow a call. Over the phone from his home in Austin, Texas, he uses a prison-yard vocabulary to describe his work and what he sees as the Clintons’ top transgressions. Most of his ranting isn’t fit for a family newspaper and is better suited to those magazines on the top shelf that are sold wrapped in opaque plastic (he isn’t shy).

“I’m probably the nation’s top opposition researcher on Bill and Hillary Clinton,” Morrow boasts.

The twist? Morrow is an informal volunteer on the campaign of presidential hopeful Rep. Ron Paul (R-Texas), even though the campaign says Morrow has no formal relationship with its operation. “[Paul] doesn’t send me out to trash Hillary Clinton,” Morrow says. “I do it on my own, because she deserves it, ya know?”  

When you get down to his political beliefs, he describes himself as a “Libertarian-Republican.” He’s against taxes and for small government and preserving U.S. national sovereignty. Morrow is a former Democrat. He says he voted for Walter Mondale in the 1984 presidential election and Michael Dukakis in the 1988 contest.

In addition to Morrow’s e-mail work, which began a couple of years ago because, as he puts it, “she needs to be exposed for the criminal that she is,” last year he launched www.1984arkansasmotheroftheyear.com. The website provides Morrow yet another platform to distribute his anti-Clinton messages; its name is a reference to an award Clinton won while serving as Arkansas’ first lady.

Morrow, who holds a master’s degree in business administration from the University of Texas at Austin and a bachelor’s degree from Princeton University, has amassed his e-mail list the simple way.

“I just plug e-mail addresses off the Internet,” Morrow says. “Nothing scientific about it.”

He’s demure about the size of his e-mail list but says it includes “some of the nation’s top political reporters and bloggers.”

“I won’t go into how large it is, but my stuff is very widely distributed,” he says. “A lot of people read it.”

Even though Morrow says his e-mail blasts elicit “almost no phone calls” and not “a lot of e-mails back,” he insists the response to his anti-Clinton efforts is “wonderful.”

“I get a few reporters calling me, and the story is always, ‘The Clinton haters and their attacks on Hillary Clinton,’ ” he says.

The Clinton campaign did not return phone calls and e-mails requesting a response to Morrow and his work.

As for why people should pay attention to his message, Morrow says, “I’m basically the heartbeat of America. I’m not some sort of paid lobbyist.”
