The Prescription Drug Delivery System: Tackling Costs, Ensuring Access

In the United States, expenditures on prescription drugs are rising faster than overall health care spending. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, about 17 percent of health care spending in 2015 was directed toward prescription medicines, up from roughly seven percent in the 1990s.

What will it take to tackle the rising cost of medicines? How can every entity in the prescription drug delivery system help manage costs and keep medicines accessible for all Americans?

How can the system be made more transparent and sustainable for all those who use it? What innovative market-based solutions are being explored and what role can government play?

The Hill convened a wide-ranging discussion including manufacturers, insurers, pharmacy benefit managers, employers and patients to explore a healthcare landscape where stakeholders are working to ensure patients get the medicines they need, at a price they can afford.
