Libyan opposition leader invited to the White House

By Sam Youngman - 05/12/11 10:37 AM ET

President Obama's top national security adviser will meet with the leader of Libya's newly formed opposition at the White House on Friday.

National Security Adviser Tom Donilon and other senior officials will meet with Mahmoud Gibril and a delegation from the Libyan Transitional National Council, the opposition group formed as leader Moammar Gadhafi tried to violently suppress a rebellion.

The White House said Gibril and his group will also be meeting with members of Congress.

The meeting comes as NATO has stepped up its bombing campaign in Libya, and world leaders, including Obama, have repeatedly called for Gadhafi to leave power.
