Education Secretary Arne Duncan is departing the Obama administration after seven years, according to a senior administration official.

Duncan reportedly announced his decision in a letter sent to Department of Education staff.

Obama is tapping Education official John King, Jr., as Duncan’s replacement, according to the official. He is not nominating King as Duncan’s permanent replacement, however.

King currently serves as a deputy secretary of Education. He overseas preschool through high school education and manages department operations there.
Obama plans on announcing his cabinet changes in a Friday afternoon conference from the White House.
