Mattis retired as a Marine general in 2013. He had previously worked with UAE military officials as head of U.S. Central Command. 
 
According to CNN, the general's request was disclosed when the Project on Government Oversight filed a Freedom of Information Act request regarding retired military officers who had requested to work for foreign governments 
  
He was confirmed as defense secretary 98-1, with Congress waiving a federal law requiring a seven-year period between a nominee serving in the active duty military and being confirmed to the position.
