Poll: Republican voters back Trump in fight with McConnell

Sixty percent of GOP voters think Trump is more in touch with their party, with 16 percent choosing McConnell.

Voters also said that Trump was more honest than the Senate Republican leader, by 55 to 14 percent. 

Trump and McConnell have been feuding publicly in recent weeks.

Trump blasted McConnell after Republicans in the Senate failed to pass an ObamaCare repeal bill by one vote.

The president even suggested that McConnell might want to consider stepping down from his post if he cannot advance his agenda, including ObamaCare repeal, tax reform and infrastructure spending.

Half of Republicans in the Politico-Morning Consult poll said the attacks against McConnell were appropriate, with 32 percent disagreeing.

Fifty percent also said Trump is the more conservative, with only 25 percent choosing McConnell.

The poll also found Republican voters believe Trump is more knowledgeable than McConnell about policy issues by 41 to 34 percent.

Voters overall say McConnell is more knowledgeable by 47 to 21 percent.

Republican voters said McConnell is more knowledgeable about the legislative process, though, by 47 to 29 percent. 

The poll surveyed 1,997 registered voters from Aug. 10 to 14. Roughly half were interviewed before the Saturday violence at a white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, Va.
