Former White House chief strategist Stephen Bannon says conservatives need to work on getting through a "corrupt and incompetent" Republican establishment.

During a speech Sunday at a rally hosted by Phyllis Schlafly Eagles, Bannon said he left the White House earlier this year to help President Trump from the outside, according to The Associated Press.

Trump "needed a wingman to go against the Republican establishment," Bannon said.

Bannon chided congressional Republicans, saying they don't back Trump's "populist, nationalist, conservative" ideas.

“They’re not conservatives. They’re liberals, and that is what we’ve got to fight every day,” he said.

Bannon was awarded the Phyllis Schlafly Eagle Award by the conservative leadership group.

The rally Sunday in St. Louis, Mo., came at a time when the city has been at the center of major protests and demonstrations.

Bannon returned to Breitbart News last month after leaving the White House.
