Obama to sign unemployment extension

By Sam Youngman - 11/05/09 03:49 PM ET

President Barack Obama will sign into law on Friday legislation that extends unemployment benefits and continues the $8,000 homebuyer tax credit.

The White House said Thursday, shortly after the House passed the bill, that Obama will sign the bill that "builds on Recovery Act provisions aimed at spurring new job creation."

The Bureau of Labor Statistics will announce what is expected to be an uptick in the national unemployment rate on Friday morning as the number nears Obama's prediction of 10 percent national unemployment by year's end.

The House voted overwhelmingly in favor of the legislation after the Senate passed it on Wednesday.

The measure extends unemployment relief for up to 20 additional weeks and creates a tax cut for struggling businesses in addition to the one-time extension of the homebuyer tax credit, the White House said.

How does this apply to those of us who's benefits will end in feb or march. Does it apply to all of us through the coming year.BY Ray Thompson on 11/05/2009 at 16:20
The house and Senate will most likely pass an extension to the current end date (before years end) bringing it well into 2010 so you will be included.BY Rick on 11/05/2009 at 16:33
How will this extension work for me I live in California and I ran out of my benifits in August and I still can't find a jobBY Jerry on 11/05/2009 at 16:56
Jerry if you qualified for the past extension you will qualify for this one too, it is a federal extension it doesn't matter where you liveBY Rick on 11/05/2009 at 17:00
I am reading that this is going to take until mid December to get the checks out…is this true? I have been waiting for my child support since August and will not receive anything (since there are no jobs) until this starts. I work, but rely on my child support which unfortuneately comes from Unemployment.BY Shannon on 11/05/2009 at 17:02
I am at weeks 18 19 of my Tier 1 twenty week extension. Will this nhew extension apply to myself as I am useing my unemployment benefits to continue to purchase my health care which I just received notice will be going up another 137.00 per month?BY Bill H. on 11/05/2009 at 17:09
Shannon, it depends on the state where you live on how well prepared (technology wise) they are, I have been told that it depends on how different programs (state and feds) communicate with each other, the more outdated the states technology is ..the longer it takesBY Rick on 11/05/2009 at 17:13
Jerry,You will be entitled to the new extension.BY Steve on 11/05/2009 at 17:15
