Sen. Sessions blasts Justice Department for mixing politics into Ft. Hood inquest

By Susan Crabtree - 11/17/09 03:10 PM ET

Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-Ala.) is questioning the motive behind what he sees as the Justice Department’s reluctance to provide information about the Fort Hood massacre to congressional investigators.

Sessions said he talked last week to Attorney General Eric Holder, who told him that the Justice Department and the FBI could not provide information to Senate investigators because it could hinder the prosecution of Maj. Nidal Hasan, the alleged gunman accused of killing 13 people at the sprawling Army base in Texas.

Sessions, the top Republican on the Senate Judiciary Committee and also a member of the Armed Services panel, believes Justice is worried about the political fallout involved in revealing details about a case that could have been prevented.

“[Holder] said, ‘We can’t provide information on Fort Hood because it will impact the trial,’” Sessions recounted. “It’s not as if this is a difficult case. I think the real reason is that they’re afraid of information coming out that could be politically damaging.”

The Justice Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Holder is set to testify before a Judiciary Committee hearing on oversight of the Justice Department on Wednesday morning. Republican senators plan to grill Holder on the fallout over Fort Hood, as well as the Obama administration’s decision to try five terrorist suspects in U.S. courts, including Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, the self-described mastermind behind the Sept. 11 attacks, in a Manhattan court.

Obama has pulled KSM into NYC just like the Greeks pulled the Trojan's Horse into Troy. It will open up the gates to our intelligence sources and methods. And it has the potential to do great damage to our civil law system. Obama has no problem with it and understands well this Broadway Play is political theater. He has put that ahead of the security interests of the United States. At the same time he will not permit an investigation by the Senate of why there existed no will to connect the numerous dots, which were at the end of noses in numerous government agencies. Obama is acting as if 9/11 never happened. It is a pre 9/11 mindset and it is dangerous because it does not even pretend to do in private what must be done. It is deliberate avoidance of the reality that Muslim extremists, acting as soldiers of a caliphate state, are committing mass murder for Allah everywhere and with anyone who disagrees with their imperial and bigoted views. One bad decision after another. Our President is very confused and misguided, may his time in office be but one term.BY graham on 11/17/2009 at 16:24
Graham,Brother, l could not have said it better.BY Huck on 11/17/2009 at 20:25
Hook, Line Sinker. Graham, dude, Fox has set your dial to Terror Red, and you'll forever be living in fear. I'd be terrified of the world as you see it if your hatred fear didn't just make you so sad. "Pre-9/11 POV"—- the world did not end on 9/11. Our Constitution did not end on 9/11. Our nation is stronger than 9/11. We should not allow the terrorists of 9/11 to rewrite our nation to be calibrated solely upon them.BY Honest Abe on 11/17/2009 at 20:39
We are a nation's rule of law, not a police state. We should let the process to take its course. Many of our HONORABLE soldiers, who laid to rest in Arlington National Cemetery or else where, fought for what? KGB's style of justice? I did not think so… sometimes, it does not making any senses, but we have to do it so stop playing politics.BY yellowfish on 11/17/2009 at 20:43
Yellowfish,BO did not have to bring them here. l do not live in New York, actually l live along ways away in Montana. But the fact that these guys will set foot on USA soil REALLY bothers me. However, lm sure not as much as my brothers and sisters in New York. BTW. l believe the "Yellowfish" is a bottom feeder. So eat my bottom!!!BY Huck on 11/17/2009 at 20:56
@HUCK This site is for adult only, childrens under 3 are not allowed. You can not forget our constitution just because you don't like it. America is a country of the braves, not the country of coward. If we are not afraid to chase and to catch the terrorists from all over the world why do we have to afraid to try them on our soil.BY yellowfish on 11/17/2009 at 22:00
Honest Abe, I think you are a bit naive about the threat of radical Islam. What 911 taught us was that we are exposed, unlike ever before. To suggest to Graham he's taken the bait hook, line, and sinker is a little funny. Do you blame everything on Fox News? BTW Fox has done a terrible job of reporting on the jihad. I would like to suggest a couple of reading assignments for those reading these posts. I would start with American Jihad by Steven Emerson. He does an outstanding job of explaining the early infiltration of the US by the Muslim Brotherhood (in the 70s and 80s). Next read The Complete Infidel's Guide to the Koran by Robert Spencer which covers in lay terms what the jihad is all about. Next, I would read Muslim Mafia which chronicles CAIR's involvement in the jihad (which is substantial). Last but not least, I would recommend Rules for Radicals to understand where the personal attacks like yours on 'ol Graham come from. Man, you guys sure are becoming predictable, and in case you haven't looked at the polls lately you're going to get drove in 2010…BY JT on 11/17/2009 at 23:43
There's nothing in our Constitution that guarantees an enemy combatant a civil trial. It's reckless, irresponsible, and emblematic of this administration's dangerous incompetence.BY Louis on 11/18/2009 at 01:56
Obama isn't anywhere near confused or misguided. He knows exactly what he's doing. Read his book, "Dreams of my Father" and you'll know exactly why.BY D. M. on 11/18/2009 at 04:22
This country was built stronger than any political hack who tries to weasel and dodge responsibility. Hearings in Congress now are the checks and balances that will open up this can of worms. The Constitution rules.BY TParty4USA on 11/18/2009 at 06:42
