Jaime Herrera defeated Denny Heck to take Washington’s 3rd district seat in Congress and put retiring Rep. Brian Baird’s (D-Wash.) seat in Republican hands.

Herrera is already pretty familiar with Capitol Hill. From 2005 to 2007, she was a senior legislative aide to Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-Wash.) and advised the congresswoman on healthcare policy, education, veterans’ and women’s issues.

Before that, Herrera, while a college student, interned at the White House Office of Political Affairs. In 2007, she was appointed as a representative for Washington state’s 18th legislative district and later ran for election and won. In the State Legislature, she served on the Healthcare and Wellness and Transportation committees.
