Joe Heck first announced he was running for governor this cycle but later switched to run against Democratic incumbent Dina Titus. He handily won the Republican primary with 69 percent of the vote. He began his career as a volunteer firefighter and ambulance attendant in rural Pennsylvania, then went through medical school, where he specialized in osteopathic medicine. He also serves as a colonel in the U.S. Army Reserve, and recently returned from a deployment to Iraq. In addition, Heck started his own company, Specialized Medical Operations Inc., which provides medical training, consulting and operational support to different law enforcement agencies and military special-operations teams.
