Andy Harris burst onto the national political scene in 2008, defeating nine-term centrist Republican Rep. Wayne Gilchrest in the GOP primary. The anesthesiologist eventually lost to Democrat Frank Kratovil in the general election, only to beat him in this year’s rematch.

Harris served 17 years in the United States Naval Reserve, including active duty during Desert Storm, eventually earning the rank of commander. He practices medicine at hospitals on Maryland’s Eastern Shore and at Johns Hopkins.
