The son of libertarian Rep. Ron Paul (R-Texas), Rand Paul surprised many observers by winning the GOP primary for the Senate seat held by retiring Sen. Jim Bunning (R).

His defeat of Secretary of State Trey Grayson — the anointed choice of national Republicans, including Senate GOP leader Mitch McConnell (Ky.) — was seen as one of several examples of where the Tea Party movement upended the political establishment. A licensed ophthalmologist and staunch conservative in the mold of his father, Paul defeated state Attorney General Jack Conway in the general election.
